What is Macrobiotics ?
Macrobiotics is a way of life and a diet that is very close to nature. Macrobiotics teaches us that when we are unhappy or ill, we can cure ourselves, namely by living and eating in a more natural way. The macrobiotic dietetics advises only those types of food that don’t do us any harm. It also keeps into account the individual differences between people: for example an office clerk benefits by a completely different diet than a construction worker. At the same time it takes into account the environment in which we live: people who live in a tropical environment benefit by food that grows in that environment – this food is not suitable for people who live in a moderate climate. To finish macrobiotics takes into account a person’s constitution and a person’s current state of health: the diet of a person who is perfectly healthy doesn’t need to be as strict as the diet of someone who is diagnosed with cancer. Because it takes into account all these factors, macrobiotics obtains excellent results when it comes to controlling blood pressure, weight and cholesterol percentages.
But macrobiotics is not only about food: it is a complete way of life. Apart from food physical exercise and the way in which a person approaches life are important. The macrobiotic philosophy is very simple and is base don the natural principles of balance and harmony. The purpose of the macrobiotic life style is seeing to it that not only a person’s health but also a person’s harmony between body, mind and soul is restored. Only when that harmony is restored, a person can be truly healthy and happy.
The macrobiotic community has been active for more than 50 years and is still growing. The pioneers lay the foundation of the natural and organic food revolution of this decade. Today macrobiotics is trendier than ever and more and more people are convinced that you are what you eat, that a healthy, natural life style is important and that you can control your own health yourself.
The basis of macrobiotics is formed by the philosophical principle of yin and yang. Yin and yang are the two contrary forces in between of which everything in our universe moves. The yin-force is the force that moves from the earth in the direction of heaven. This force results in expansion. The yang-force moves from heaven in the direction of the earth and results in contraction. This may sound rather difficult but it isn’t: once you understand that our whole life is a careful balancing exercise and that the intention of this exercise is not to lean over to the extreme yin or the extreme yang side, you fairly quickly learn to play with these two principles and you not only get a hold on your diet but also on every other aspect of your life.
Two important people in the history of macrobiotics are Georges Ohsawa and Michio Kuchi. They have brought macrobiotics to Europe and the United States. Their teaching approach was very different, but both in their own way they have made an enormous contribution to the awakening and education of large groups of people in the prosperous western world. They have thought us that healing is possible at any time, if only we take into account the natural order of the universe.
